To use a SIP phone, you typically go through the following steps:

  1. Choose a SIP Service Provider: Before you can use a SIP phone, you need a SIP account which you can get from a SIP service provider. This provider will give you the necessary credentials to configure your SIP phone, such as a SIP address (which is similar to an email address), username, password, and domain.

  2. Select a SIP Phone: A SIP phone can be a physical hardware device that looks like a traditional telephone or a softphone application that runs on your computer or mobile device. Choose one according to your needs.

  3. Configure Your SIP Phone: Input the credentials provided by your SIP service provider into your SIP phone's settings. This usually includes:

    • SIP server address or proxy: The address of the SIP server that will handle your calls.

    • Username and Password: The authentication information for your SIP account.

    • Domain: Sometimes referred to as the registrar server, this is the domain under which your SIP address is registered.

    • Port: The network port used for connecting to the SIP server, often 5060 for UDP/TCP or a different one for TLS.

  4. Connect the SIP Phone to Network: For hardware-based SIP phones, connect them to your network using an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi (if supported). Softphones simply require installation on a compatible device and a connection to the internet.

  5. Dialing: Once everything is set up and connected, you can make a call by dialing the SIP address or regular phone number (if your service provider supports PSTN integration) of the person you want to contact.

  6. Advanced Features: Many SIP phones come with advanced features like voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding, conferencing, and more. You may need to consult the phone’s manual or your service provider’s documentation to take full advantage of these functions.

  7. Maintain Security: Ensure that your network and SIP phone are secure. Use strong passwords, keep your devices' firmware updated, and if available, use encryption (like TLS) to protect your communications.

Here's an example of what inputs might look like on a SIP phone configuration screen:

Once configured, the SIP phone will register with the SIP server using the provided details, and you should be ready to place and receive calls.
